RECENTLY PURCHASED BOAT WITH 76 85 HP MOTOR FIRST A LITTLE BACKGROUND - FIRST NOTICED DEAD SHORT BETWEEN MAG AND POWER TO IGN. REPLACED IGN. AND INSTALLED NEW WIRE FROM MAG TO POWER PACK. HAVE NO SPARK. TESTED STATOR AS WELL AS HAD IT TESTED BY LOCAL SHOP, IT OHMS OUT FINE. TESTED SENSOR COIL OHMS OUT FINE. REPLACED POWER PACK IT STILL NO SPARK. DISCONEDTED PLUG TO CONTROLS AND USED A REMOTE STARTER, NOTHING ALSO TRIED REMOVING THE MAG WIRE FROM POWER PACK. HAVE CLEANED ALL ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS. HAS BRAND NEW BATERY ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD HELP RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS - FOLLOWED ALL BOOKS AS BEST I COULD

Pretty thorough job. Ultimately, you'd need to a peak reading voltmeter or oscilloscope to measure what the stator is sending to the powepack, and what the powerpack is sending to the coils.

Until you can do that, here are some educated guesses. What do you mean by "mag"? Have you tried removing the black with yellow stripe wire (ground to kill wire) from the powerpack, and cranking the starter? Maybe that's what you meant by mag wire, couldn't tell.

yes that is what i meant, I can tell you that the power pack is getting about 65 on my fluke meter on the dc setting but nothing coming out

You should get 150V peak on the signal from the stator to the powerpack (according to www.rapair.com).

Not sure what you mean by 65V DC. Obviously the stator is not providing a steady 65V DC - is your Fluke a peak-reading model?

Right, that's with the engine cranking. Did the local shop test the stator output?

Re: 76 85 HP JOHNSON NO SPARK

IS IT POSSIBLE THE NEW BATTERY IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO GIVE THE DESIRED OUTPUT OF CRANKING AMPS OR IFIT TURNS THE MOTOR IT SHOULD SURFISE? ALSO I TESTED FOR VOLTS AND I ONLY GET AROUND 65 UNLESS I AM DOING IT WRONG

Does it sound like it's cranking slowly? You've got a new battery, I assume it's cranking fine.

You've already covered all the obvious stuff. At this point, you really do need to be able to measure the outputs of the stator, pack and/or sensors to be able to learn what's going on.

Re: 76 85 HP JOHNSON NO SPARK

For a moment there I thought you had followed me around the last year or so workin on my 1975 85hp. I did everything you said you did and my problem was the freakin sensorcoil/timer base. The one I put in it tested out exactly the same as the one that was bad but it took care of the problem. I dumped alot of time a money and headache into it and all it was the whole time was a part that I tested out to be fine. Frustrating.....and now I find out I possibly couldve adjusted it or somethin....after my experience I would go the timer base/ sensor coil route.....its definitely worth tryin to adjust it like that one post said..I would loved to known myself

Unusual for both sensor coils to go, but I guess not impossible. In any case, what he wants to do here is test the output of the stator, pack & sensor coils, rather than throwing more parts at it and hoping.

I always thought the same thing about both coils bein bad. But that was my prob. After much thought I understand how the timerbase bein outta adjustment could cause a prob. I am starting to believe since both of my sensor coils tested out the same that I will beable to readjust the other and keep it for a spare. Thank God since those jokers are 100 bucks used
