Can anyone tell me exactly where the two wires from the stop button are supposed to be attached on the engine?
You see I'm resurrecting my first boat which is a 14 ft Peterborough rowboat with this little 7.5 horse complete with a little side console setup for it. My kid is 4 which is just about the age I was when I started boating in earnest and I figure it would be fun to blow the cobwebs and mouse crap out of it and teach him how to run it.
Anyway, back to the kill button. Many moons ago I came to the following conclusion that it would be easier (and safer) to be able to kill the motor from the helm rather than scrambling aft to the engine. Not bad for a kid of 12, eh?
Now because this engine is not electric start there is a blank where the ignition switch would go on the throttle unit.
And wouldn't you know it, the hole for the ignition switch was exactly the same size as the hole for the kill button on the motor. So, I disconnected the wires, pulled the kill button off the motor, split open the MerContol and popped the button in. Fit as pretty as you please. Actually, the electric choke blank would have worked too as I recall, but I was afraid I'd lean on it while underway and kill the motor.
I ran some heavy gauge wire from the kill button back to the motor and was done. Extra marks for using the blank from the control box on the motor to plug the hole!
That setup served me well for years, although I did get some regular ribbing at marinas regarding the point of putting a console and controls in a boat with only 7 horsepower...
Flash forward 20 years and the boat has come out of storage but my wiring to the engine got all eaten by the aforementioned mice and needs to be re-run. Also, to put the engine in storage I disconnected the kill switch wiring from inside the motor to get it off the boat.
Now, I can't remember where the wires go!
Anyway, rather long-winded but I figured someone might wonder how I could possibly wind up wondering how kill button wiring works...(whew, that's a lot of typing. Time for a beer)
