75volvo update and question

I got my 75 Volvo Penta 130 w/ 270 outdrive back out on the lake today. Water cycled perfectly other than some new leaks created while testing hoses and such for obstructions. Motor reved up and ran properly while in gear. However, now when in gear, at about 2000 rpms (if that high) the outdrive kicks out of gear. Lower the rmps and it kicks back in. Is this possibly different reaction to the same root problem that I had originally(and still not really diagnosed). Could there be a restriction or problem with the outdrive that would cause both of these results?? Anyone?? Anyone??

Re: 75volvo update and question

Sounds like either the cone clutch in the upper gear box is slipping, either not going all the way into gear because of a worn cable or shifter,
Shifter could be ok, and there is water in the gear lube, did you check it?
Could also be a defective prop. If the hub is broke loose it will do that. Put a mark on the hub and the prop and run it, then look to see if the marks have moved.

Re: 75volvo update and question

Thanks Don. I posed another similar question just a minute ago as you were answering this one. And it was closely related to what you said here. Yes, there is now water in the outdrive oil. It was not there before I put it in the water yesterday and I only ran it for about 5-10 minutes. I have heard from many that there should be an upper and a lower screw for the oil but there is only one that I can find. Directly on top of the drive and it has a dipstick on it. Am I over looking a drain screw?

I would be checking the bellows for water if it was my boat. You really need to get a Volvo OEM manual for your engine and one for your drive if you are planning on doing the maintenance yourself.
Here is a link to Volvo where you can download a free owners manual. It will show you where the drain plug. Select AQ130A from the marine engine dropdown menu.
Make sure you use new gaskets and orings on the drain plug and dipstick. They may look reusable, but they are not.

Re: 75volvo update and question

Don, I really appreciate your advice and help. But I have had trouble getting a Volvo auto dealer in Dallas to locate the manual that you gave me the number to. I am calling a boat shop Monday for the manual. I also attempted to download the owner's manual that you gave me the link to and all it downloaded was a blank page. What I am getting at is that I am trying to go about this properly, but in the mean while, if I continue to ask stupid questions, please continue to help. I'm asking that from everyone that has the knowledge that I haven't had the time and experience to acquire as of yet. Thanks to all and I think this forum is great!!!

That owners manual is 12.4 MB in size and will take a while to download even with DSL. Like the little screen says, with a 56K dialup line it will take 31 minutes to download. You also need to save it to your computer, not just open it. Otherwise everytime you want to look at it you have to open it again.

Also, you need to find a Volvo Penta marine dealer, not an automotive dealer. 2 different ballgames.

There's a dealer ( Palmer Power ) down in Houston who will order it for you, they will take a credit card # over the phone, I've ordered many parts from them and really never had a problem in getting the parts ( if they have to order them from VP they come out of some warehouse in GA., and it only takes 2-3 day to get it to Houston ) there # is 713-644-6410, talk to Pam, as she is the one with the VP knowledge
