75hp Suzuki outboard

I have replaced my impeller in the pump housing in the lower unit of my 1996 Suzuki outboard. Now I cannot get the "pin" back thru the gear shifter rod at the top of the housing. What am I doing wrong?

Hi,<br />I have a Suzuki DT65 and had the lower unit removed last year for new impeller. I had the control box in neutral before I removed the lower unit and when I mounted the lower unit back it was rather easy to get the "bolt" back trough gear rod that comes up vertically from lower unit. But I had to use a flashlight and I belive I used a long screwdriver or so to get it all lined up in there with just a little force(very hard to see in there to get things lined up). Then it popped in place and I could mount the bolt on the other side and fasten it. No problem really.
