75hp mariner '84 Tilt / Trim problem

Hi Y'all, hope everything is fine and dandy in your part of the world.<br />I have a problem with my tilt / trim, up and down works fine, but it doesn't want to stay up. It'll hold for a while but gradually sinks back down to the bottom setting. I mentioned this to my mechanic and he started rolling his eyes and said very expensive to fix - possibly. Any ideas / opinions most appreciated.

If the manual is screwed all the way out and without a test gauge, the only way I know to see if it's the pump or cyls is to tilt it up hold it in that position and cap the hoses and then release it, if it still goes down it's the cyl and if it don't it's the pump
