Hello men,
I've been into a 225 hp OMC for about three mounths now. Removed heads, cleaned jackets, rebuild carb.
The usual. Have the old 350 running quite well.
Holding on a cool 160 deg. Major mildstone8)

The LU only shifts into rev.
I have ohmed the coils and get +/- 8 ohms resistance,
on both coils.
I suspect the forward clutch spring.
Any other possible culprits?
I do not have the proper LU lube in her now.
Can this prevent her from shifting into forward?.

I plan on a teardown of the LU this week.

Anyone with experiance on a LU rebuild, please
shoot some advice my way

Thanks
WK

lube wouldn't prevent it from engaging. Could be the clutch spring. Does it try to engage at all in F? shut the engine off and have a listen to the drive when you put +12V to the F clutch wire...

Well you could tear it all down and look at it,then put it all back together and then put the right oil in and see what happens.

Or you could change to the correct oil FIRST and see what happens.

Kjdkjd,
I have done just that. Only clicks in reverse.
Does not do anything on forward gear.
The prop does spin in forward direction in
neutral (I think thats normal)
I didn't think reg. gear oil would pevent a shift.
Thanks

DHPmarine.
I really didn't get YELLING, I got sarcasm.
THANKS FOR TRYING TO HELP.

Anyone with experiance AND willing to help
would be appreciated

Ya,it could come across as sarcasm.Sorry,it just came out.

In reality if you have 12 volts + going to the forward coil, the forward spring ($337.61) is broken.Next in line would be the coil ($287.43) itself.

But what i was thinking ...... even if these parts are okay, the gear won't turn if the wrong oil (or water and oil) is between the spring and the clutch hub,or even between the windings of the spring..So I would correct what is known to be wrong before going deeper.

This gearcase works by the coil energizing, causing the spring to 'grab' the clutch hub, thus turning the gear.

DHP

by the way .... BRP warehouses show plenty of springs (313455) but no coils (382366).

Well it's official,
The LU will have to be Operated on.
Replaced the lube yest.
Same action, Perfect rev., no for.

Well since I'm the only one that will have ever
attempted this type operation...........
I'll keep ya'll posted.

If you know of an exp. nurse (w/all the right curves)
That could help w/this experiment.......
let me know.

OK,
Some have complained that people ask questions,
but never reply after that.
Sooo.....ignoring the total lack of interest in this thread. (or lack of knowledge?, which I dought).

My problem was a broken forward clutch spring.
Or more correctly, the tang that engages the gear
was sheared off.

Now for the fun part.8)
I heated the end and bent a new tang.
A little shaping w/a file and she fits perfect.

A REPAIRED clutch spring?
Might not last, but.............
It sure is fund:)

Wire...

Don't take it personal. We who own OMC's are treated like we have leprosy.

I'd be scouring EBay for a replacement spring. Your fix (which as a backyard hacker I admire) most likely will not last.

Word of advice. idle down before changing gears. Slip into neutral first before going into gear.

I hope ypu are using the type "C" gear lube. If not, you'll be replacing the coils too! Regular gear oil will chemically attack the wire insulation and cause a short, ruining your coils.

Re: '75 OMC foot rebuid?

The tang on the spring is important, but the 6 allen set screws MUST be torqued correctly, and loctited.I don't have the manual, but this proceedure is very essential. Otherwise instant failure.

My family owned your exact year drive. We were always very gentle shifting that thing like Kagee said. Between us and the person who bought the boat, the drive had over 800 hours on it and it was still running the last time we heard ,which was many years ago now.

Kagee,
Thanks for the reply.
I took the forward, "re-tanged", spring and swapped it
w/the reverse spring. My thinking is that rev will be used
MUCH less and my bandaid might last longer?
LU lube is as recomended.

THANKS

DHP,
Thats the kinda "help" I was looking for.......BEFORE
I put her back together
Thanks anyway.

Bruce,
Very encouraging...........Thanks
The hours say 698. Not many on a '75.
The meter may be broke, I know that she looked great
on the inside.

DukesFin,
AWSOME.......e-MAIL SENT.

THANKS
