Ok, i'm on the home stretch of getting the 850 up and running. I almost installed the distributor in the powerhead before bolting the powerhead to the tower but decided that I could do it after wards. Now I'm not so sure. Can anyone verify whether or not it's possible to get the distributor installed without pulling the powerhead. I'm starting to think I will need to re-pull the powerhead, install the distributor then install the power head.

I managed to remove mine and clean it up with the powerhead installed. The front plate, coil, solenid and carbs had to be removed to do it all though. I put the distributor cap on just before the front plate was bolted back on. It is doable but there is not a lot of room to work with. I had the lower cowl loose with the wrap around lower piece off as well.

Several beers later - it was all back together. LOL

Leave the distributor cap off and be very careful with the rotor button - it does not come off of the shaft!

Thanks all. I pulled the starter and upper carb and was able to get it stabbed.
