1975 johnson 9.9 will run with the choke pulled out half way . Unless full throttle . I have replaced the fuel pump , carb kit , and spark plugs the tank is clean with new lines and gas. I gapped my plugs .030 my points .020 and have great spark and over 90 psi on each cylinder. Can get it to run with the choke pulled out half way and the throttle up . But wont stay running unless full throttle no idle . Any help would be appreciated .

When you did the carb rebuild did you pop off the little caps and clean the idle passages. Sounds like the idle passages are still plugged.

Have had the same issues with an old 18hp that I redid.

Yes I took the welsh plugs out and cleaned it pretty good ,but I guess there is a chance something could have clogged it up . I'll tear it down again and blow some air though it I haven't any plugs on hand only what came with the kit. And I'm gonna clean my tank one more time also? Thanks

Did you replace the needle valve bearing? It is a very small plastic funnel looking device stuffed into the end of the slow speed orifice.

Pay close attention to the packing washers. A small air leak will make it run too lean.

No I didn't replace the needle valve bearing I think I still have the one that came with the kit how do I get the old one out? I have a new problem arise today also the crankshaft key is sheared and I can't get it out I tried a small punch and a strong magnet , but no luck . I'll definetly look into the needle valve bearing ASAP thanks. But I have to order a new key.

I am sure you probably figured out a way to get the needle bearing out by now, but if not, take a fish hook with a barb on it and straighten it out. Lightly put it in the jet orifice and try to hook the bearing with the barb. Do everything lightly since the fish hook will be steel and the carburetor is aluminum and you don't want to damage the carb.
