I know my title is a little confusing but i Have a 1975 Starcraft Trihull Had a 70hp Johnson on it that the Power head went BOOM!!!!

I have a line a 1976 stinger on a POS boat for 550. Good spark forgot my gas line and compression tester when i went to look at it.

My dads boss gave me a 75 Javiline 85hp 105-110 compression across all four thats getting no spark.

I was wondering if eather of these motors are plug and play or will i need all the controlls form the boat that the motors are coming off of?

What is the difference in the 75hp Stinger and the 70hp johnson? Other then the 5hp I seams to be alot smaller then the 70hp that i removed.

First question you have to ask yourself is what is the max HP rating for your hull. I know on my little 15' tri-hull it was rated for a 70 HP max.
Taking a quick look on the Johnson/Evinrude website, the remote control for the 70 and the 85 Javilin are interchangeable, so it should be a plug-n-play as long as the control cables are the right length. The '76 motor shows a different part number, but thats not to say it may not be compatible. I leave that to the experts.
My personal take is that at least around here (North Georgia), mid-70' vintage 50-85 HP motors go for around $500-$700 and are a dime a dozen. If the 85 HP is being given to you, and its applicable to your boat, then that is the route I would go. You can diagnose the spark situation and the fix may be easy fix (then again, it may not. I looked up the price of the ignition components, and some of the pricey ones are a couple of hundred dollars). If it turns out not to be worth the price of fixing the 85 HP, then go looking for a replacement. Unfortunately the ignition parts don't seem to be interchangeable with the 70 HP.
Good luck.

The 70 and 75 are essentially the same motor. Differences include trim and graphics, plus some subtle porting changes to the powerhead. Can't recall for sure, but some 75s had a slightly higher compression head, depending on the year. Again, the changes are subtle and not likely to be noticed except on higher performance hulls that respond better to those changes.

As noted above, free is free. The controls will swap around.

Thank you Im still not sure what im gonna do Kinda leaning to the stinger as i have lots of good parts for a 3 cylinder looper and none for the Javiline. I may still take the Javiline put it in a tank and try to get it running. As for right now the ice is off the water and i wanna get out there. The kind of luck i have had it would not be bad to have a extra on standby. Thanks
