I've got an 1985 75 HP Merc and I'm having trouble determining whether there's water in the lower unit gear case. Any suggestions?
Also are there any guidelines with respect to changing your seals based upon the age of the engine....or is it a matter of don't mess with it if it isn't broken. I've never had the seals replaced. I might add that this engine does not get a lot of hard use.
Thanks.....

Re: 75 HP Merc Outboard

A sure way to tell is let the motor stand still for at least several days, by then the water(if any) will settle to the bottom and when you remove the lower drain plug the water will come ouy first. Also if water is present the color of the gear oil will be milky colored instead of gold or black. I wouldnt change the seals until there is a definate problem, an old motor and money consitered and all Outboardboy
