I am setting up and test running my Evinrude in my garage prior to embarrasing myself at the lake. The engine will start, run about 3 seconds, and die. I suspect fuel flow problems but is it more likely the pump, carbs, or something else? I bought the engine used but know nothing of its past. It appears to be in excellent condition and shows little sign of use or abuse. Any help appreciated. I need to be led in the right direction. Thanks!

Hey Old, I agree with you about it being a fuel problem. You didn't say so but I get the impression the engine hasn't been run for some time prior to your getting it ready for use. If so, you'll need to remove & thoroughly clean the carb(s), rebuild the fuel pump & check the entire fuel delivery system (from tank to carb(s) to ensure no leaks, no rust or other junk plugging things up. Drain the old gas & replace it with fresh 87 octane fuel mixed with the proper ratio (don't know which Evinrude you've got but it's probably 50:1) of TCW3 Quicksilver (or Walmart Super Tech) outboard oil. Should be an easy fix........but if not, get back to us & we'll look further. Good luck.

I just had the same type problem. Thought was fuel issue, but turned out to be a bad coil. It would start and run for a short period then die. Sounded like fuel and all my buddies were sure it was a fuel problem. Coil fixed it quick.

put some pre-mix in a spray bottle or oil squirt can and squirt extra fuel in while running. If it keeps running by this added fuel, its a fuel starvation problem(carb, filter, pump, lines, air leak etc.)
