gday. this motor was sitting for about 8 months but started up easily and ran sweet. i took it for a run down the river tho and it died after about 2 km's. i pulled the plugs out and they were oily so i cleaned them up and replaced them, no start. i ended up having to paddle back to the ramp. back home i pulled the carb off and everything seemed ok there. does anybody have any idea what i should check next? it is a manual start job and i'm starting to look like i've got one of popeyes arms! lmao

NZ, three things all motors need.

Spark, fuel, air

1. Pull plugs or wires and check to see if you are getting spark.

2. Air is probably not a problem, but try starting with hood off in case there is an exhaust leak. It will also give you access to the carb for the next step.

3. Spray some fuel into the carb throat and see if it pops.

4. I would assume that the motor still turns over and is not locked up.

Let us know from there.

thanks for that. i checked the carb and there was fuel getting through. i have it mounted fairly weakly on my bench at the moment so starting is a problem but i will work on it. when it stopped it missed 2 or 3 times and then just died. i would expect fuel but...???

Hey NZ,
One thing Scoop forgot to mention.........COMPRESSION. But if it started right up and ran sweet, your compression is probably OK. I'd suspect an unvented fuel tank from the way you described the symptoms.
Backlash

ok. i tested the plugs today and there is plenty of spark. so that leaves fuel? it seems ok so is there anything else? as for the fuel, apart from vapour locking the tank are there any other probs to look out for?

Were the plugs wet after you tried starting it? Is there a blockage in the fuel delivery system that is not letting enough fuel in? If the plugs are wet, then it should be getting some fuel. Disconnect fuel line at carb and see if you are getting strong pulses of fuel out of the fuel pump. Check the reed plate behind the carb, this is essential in keeping enough fuel in the engine. Check the fuel filter. Spray some fuel into the carb throat.

I dont know what the temperature difference is between day and night, but by what I see on the map it does get cold at night. That makes for condensation in your tank. A lot of it in 8 months! My thinking is that some dry gas could lick your problem,or maybe you should just completely change your fuel and make sure there is no old stuff left in the carburator.

NZ, Check the (compression). I have one that has been sitting for 10 years. I got it out this year and it started doing the VERY same thing what yours is doing. I had it checked and they told me that it was the compression.
