my 74 omc out drive suddenly won't tilt up or down. I bypassed the solinoids & put 12 volts directly to the tilt motor but had no results. Has anyone had a similar problem and what to do to repair?

Re: 74 omc outdrive

When you said 'bypassed the solinoids' did you just jump the main terminals or did you put 12v directly to the wires from the motor? You can ONLY put 12v to one wire at a time or you will pooch the motor. One wire is for up, one for down. The motor grounds through the casing to the intermediate housing. Attach a ground wire directly from the battery - terminal to the motor housing, and briefly apply 12v+ to ONE wire from the motor. Can you hear the motor try to turn or hum?

I'd pull the motor out & apply power to it to see if it spins. If it does, check the shaft, hammerblow coupler & the rest of the parts in the intermediate to make sure they arent bound up or frozen.

Sounds like a toasted motor. Pull it hand have it rebuilt (about $60 or so).

HOWEVER, if you can't hear the solenoids clicking when you hit the switch make sure your switch is good and replace your solenoids - they're cheap and easy.
