Most of my experience is with OMC. But I'm the new owner of a 1974 Mercury 402 (40hp) long shaft. 140 compression on both cylinders. It runs great, but the throttle cable needs adjustment. It's not pulling the lever it's attached to far enough forward. On a similar OMC, I could make this adjustment in 3 minutes, but this Merc has me stumped. The plastic part of the cable that fits into a clamp on the port side of the engine needs to be freed from it's clamp to be spun on the threaded part of the cable. I realize if you don't know this motor, my description is not helpful. Anyway, a clamping mechanism holds both shifter cable and throttle cable in place. I can unclamp that mechanism, but it doesn't go far enough to free the throttle cable. How do I adjust the daggum throttle cable?
By the way, on OMC, I'm accustomed to the whole engine cover lifting off for access all over. This guy has a metal piece wrapped around the mid section of the power head. The top stays in place. Is there an easy way to remove the top? It would make it easier to get a screwdriver or wrench to certain places.
Issue number two is the prop is pretty beat up. What prop should I use to replace. I know I just need to look at the one on there and replace, but I didn't know if anyone had an opinion. The boat is a 1976 14 foot Bomber if that matters.
Thanks in advance for any help offered.
