74 mercruiser 140 electrical question

I just bought a 74 Glastron V-179 with a 140 Mercruiser. I noticed the Tach is not working and the Voltage meter (on the dash ) is maxed out. Are these problems related or 2 seperate issues? I only have 2 wires on the alternator, 1 red and 1 black. Any suggestions on where to start?? The wiring has been re-worked, so I probaly need to trace from the source.

Ayuh,.......... Good Luck........

I suggest you have a Test Light,+ Voltmeter with you........

It could be 1 in the Same issue,......
But it sounds like you might have More than 1 going on......
