Last year I had a boat shop look at my motor because it was idling fine, but anything past half throttle and it would bog down. I rebuilt the carbs and replaced the plugs but made no difference. The boat shop(just some Gomer with a tin shed and a 'BOAT REPARE' sign........I know it's misspelled) said that the compression was fine and suggested the timing base was bad. He wanted $700 to repair it. I told him I would retire it and paid him $200 for diagnosis. To make a long story even longer, he left off all of the screws on the terminal strip at the back of the motor. He also kept the terminal strip cover. I assume the wiring chart was printed on the cover.

Does anyone know what the wiring layout is for a 1974 Johnson Javlin 85HP. I want to try out my new timing base.

Thanks

Ahoy, Javelin. Do you need timer to CD ignition unit wiring or only the 8 point terminal strip?

If all wires are off the terminal strip it is immaterial which end you designate as pin 1.

Pin 1: Not assigned on the wiring diagram.
Pin 2: Purple and white, from plug to choke solenoid.
Pin 3: Purple, From plug to thermo switch.
Pin 4: Yellow and purple, Thermo switch to choke solenoid.
Pin 5: Yellow, from Timer base to rectifier.
Pin 6: Gray and yellow from timer base, other side open.
Pin 7: Gray from plug, gray and yellow to rectifier* (I checked this several times and compared to other V4s)
Pin 8: Red, from starter solenoid to rectifier.

* on 1977 V4s pins 6 and 7 are jumpered together. The gray lead from the plug is a tach lead and the gray and yellow from the timer to the strip is a tach signal.

If you need the connections to the CD unit, holler.

Red sky at night. . . .
JB

Forgot to mention: Maggot Motors probably didn't have a clue. You didn't mention the fuel pump or fuel system before the carbs. That is a more likely source of your problem than a timer base, but it is cheap and easy to fix. Timer bases and labor to change them, on the other hand, are very profitable.

Good luck, and if it aint fixed yet, inspect the whole fuel system and overhaul your fuel pump.

Red sky. . .
JB

WOW!!! JD, you 'da man'!!! The motor I have has a 10 point screw terminal where the 4 timer base wires run. It also has connections for the coils and plugs on the same strip. That's what I need help figuring out.

Hmmm. I am looking at a diagram for '74 to '76 V4 engines. There is a 9 point terminal strip on which only 8 are used. There are 12 connections to the CD unit, including 4 for the coils, 6 for the "Timer Stator and Charge Coil Assy" and one from the main cable (ignition kill from key switch). Is the CD unit wiring what you need?

Standing by.

JB

Okay, Javelin. Here we go:
PIn 1: Black and yellow from main plug.
Pin 2: Black and white from timer/stator unit.
Pin 3: Orange from coil#2
Pin 4: White and black from timer/stator.
Pin 5: Orange from coil#4
Pin 6: Black to ground.
Pin 7: Brown from timer/stator
Pin 8: Brown and yellow from timer/stator
Pin 9: White and black from timer/stator. (Yes, this is the second one, but I can't see any difference to ID them from onr another. Same with the black and white wires.)
Pin 10: Orange from coil#1
Pin 11: Orange ffrom coil#3
Pin 12: Black and white from Timer/stator

I am going to guess that the two pairs (2 Black/white and 2 White/black) are the same and are interchangable, since the output terminals they come from on the timer/stator unit are not numbered on the diagram. If it helps, the pair that go to pins 2 and 4 are adjacent and the pair that go to pins 9 and 12 are adjacent at the output of the timer/stator unit.

I sure like the V4s that have 2 identical 2 cylinder ignition systems better. SOOooo much easier to troubleshoot and cheaper to repair.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB
