74 Johnson 85 HP won't idle or rev

My 74 Johnson 85 HP has a strange problem. When I started the outboard after this last winter{it was winterized} it fired right up and ran on the hose for a half hour. We bought a new trailer and while we were switching the trailers at the river told my son to start it up and let it run for a while when it started it fired right up but when you pull up the warm up lever it only revs up to 900 rpms. So I took it home and changed the plugs and install new ones{Champs} and mixed some new 87 octane fuel and it ran like a champ. Went to take it out on the river today and the samething but it reved to 1200 rpm it ran for a couple of minutues and died and could not restart it. Pumping the hose didn't help NOW WHAT!!!!!!....Ted

When you go it back home did you try and run it on the muffs if so what was the results.

I didn't try it I will tommorow. This motor ran so well I troll alot and use the 85 with a troll plate it used to run all day and not load up or foul the plugs last year I ran all year with one set of plugs....

Hello Blu Lunch,<br /><br />I hope I can help out. When I bought my first boat I didn't know that you had to change out old gas. I do now because my boat ran like crap until I changed the fuel to fresh fuel. I noticed in your thread that you mixed some new fresh fuel maybe it was not enough to make it fresh. If the fuel tank doesn't have fresh fuel in it it will do that. I was just putting my two cents in. I hope I have helped out.

It was completely fresh gas. I was going to work on it today but I found and bought a 1974 Wellcraft V-20 CC with no motor on it.Several peple are sayin that maybe the carb is gummed up or the jets are clogged.

Check your spark BLU LUNCH. Sounds like the 85 ran out of it.

Possible air leak into the fuel line, or a partial blockage in same line?<br />Ross

Thanks guy for the help I gave the boat away with out the trailer today it lasted 1 1/2 hours. I'm looking forward the working on the Wellcraft V-20......Ted
