1974 Johnson 115. It has been starting and running great all season until last weekend. Now it is very had to start and when it does start, I hear a "chirping" (sounds like a random fan belt chirp on a vehicle). Last night I had it running on the ear muffs and let it run for 5 minutes and cracked the throttle. It reved up chirped and died. When I tried to restart it, it sounded like the ignition timing was off and would only pop through the exhaust. Any suggestions? I've always been good with 4-cycles but am learning that 2-cycles are like women (very temperamental)!

Thanks
Bart

Haven't got the slightest idea. But it sounds like something came loose somewhere. Maybe a screw under the flywheel?

Hey, two-strokes aren't bad. Just the induction system is different, but once you understand how it works, no problem.

Check the flywheel key. It may be sheared or partially sheared which throws off the timing, hence the popping. The chirping could have been due to a loose flywheel.

I'll check it tonight. What do I torque the flywheel nut to?

I've gotten a "chirp" sound out of some motors when the crankcase seal has been washed out in some fashion. Look for any seepage of oily residue along the seam between the crankcase cover and the motor block...

Flywheel nut torque is 100-105 ft lb.

Scott,
I'll check the seal too, thanks for the suggestion. I do feel that it is a flywheel issue do to the sudden hard to start and poping issue.

If the flywheel has slipped, I'll take lapping compound and "seat" the flywheel to the crank. This will remove nicks, burr, ect. on the tapered surfaces.

Thanks to all, I'll keep you updated.

It could be the flywheel magnet hitting one of the coils. Either loose flywheel or loose coil.

The flywheel key was sheared. Replaced, torqued and it fired right up and no more chirping. The best thing is it cost 69 cents to fix. You guys are 2 for 2 getting my back on the water. Thanks a million....Mom wants to go fishing tomorrow for M-Day.
