74 85hp johnny shifts only half way into forward

Hi I have a "74" 85hp Johnny powershift II and it will shift into reverse just fine. But went I put it into forward it will only go in far enough to idle forward it seems to be in the control box but have not found anything odd yet. any clues? (Can this be in the lower end or just in the controls)?

Dad....Did ya' disconnect the shift cable at the motor and try shifting manually at the engine? This will tell you if the engine is OK and have a problem at the control/cables. It almost sounds like the control cables are hooked up backwards. <br /><br />Disconnect both control cables and lay them where you can see the ends when you operate the controls. When you operate the control, the shift cable always moves first. You'll want to check for smooth operation of the cables to. Look at them good and insure they are servicable, no spits in the covering or anything.<br /><br />Also make sure the shift cable is adjusted right. Set the engine in neutral and the control in neutral and connect the shift cable.<br /><br />Keep us posted as to what you find....thanks.

It was a screw that had backed out in the shifter box. Thanx for all your help!!
