Hi Guys,
I have a question that is definantely going to show just how wet behind the ears I really am when it comes to old Outboards. I am going to go look at a 73 Evinrude 50HP that I found on craigslist but I have a question. Is it possible for an outboard of the era to be electric start but not have a generator? It would seem sily that a generator would not come standard on an electric start but I had to ask. I currently have a 69 Johnson 40HP and it has a generator bolted on the engine that is belt driven off of the flywheel. In all of the photos that have been sent to me so far I dont see anything like that. Is it buried somewhere else? I checked the evinrude parts website and didnt even see any reference to a generator on any of the 50HP engines that year. Please help .

your 40 does have a generator, the 1973 has a stator under the flywheel, and rectifier, that converts the AC power from the stator, to DC power to charge the battery.

there were many motors like yours that were sold without generators, it was an add on accessory. you charged your battery at night.

Wow that was a quick response. I knew that someone here would know exactly what I was talking about. Thanks so much Tashasdaddy. So if I read correctly, sometime between 69 and 73 evinrude stopped offering the separate generator and made the stator/rectifier a standard component on that 50. Right?

Right, the alternator was standard on all twin cylinder electric start 50hp motors.
