I have a 60 hp '73 Johnson with 150 lbs compression but no spark! Motor looks like nearly new, so I am loath to dump it but $325 for a part from the dealer seems out of line.<br /><br />Does anyone know of a source of the electronic "amplifier" part??<br /><br />Can I substitute an auto coil instead?<br /><br />Thanks for any advice you can send my way.

$325.00 ??? seems a little steep I have put 2 on a 115 johnson and they were about $140.00 at local/only dealer in area.Auto coil wont work. New amplifier = $<br />new motor = big $$$$$$<br /><br /><br />------------------<br />no replacement for displacement!

are you sure of the motor year? 73 was 65 hp. Automotive type coils will work after experimenting with pointgaps and resistors. IT is a temorary fix not really recommended.

Just replace the amplifier on my 60 hp johnson. I Got qoutes from dealers in the $315.00 to $350.00 range. I bought one from NAPA Auto Parts for $225.00

I put a auto coil and condenser on my 71 60hp evinrude and it works great I have not noticed any problems with it. The only thing is you have to be sure that you have room to mount it where it won't be banging around inside the motor when your running it. I used a coil and condensor from a 73 mustang.
