Re: 73 Evinrude 65hp and 68 Evinrude 5.5hp
Hi, Jets. Welcome to the board. I will tell only if you PROMISE to go get yourself a manual. Boat-owning is not like car owning, it is like car owning was 80 years ago. You must either spend obscene amounts of bux and wait weeks or you must do it yourself. So. Get yourself a manual and a few QUALITY tools.

Now. On the right (starboard) side of the lower units of both of your engines are two screw-in plugs about 1/2" in diameter. The lower one is on the bulge in front of the prop and is for draining and filling the gearcase. The upper one, about 6"-8" above it is for checking oil level and venting the crankcase when filling.

To check level: remove the upper plug and insert a pipe cleaner. The oil should be at the level of the bottom of the plug hole.

To drain: remove both plugs.

To fill: With both plugs out, place the tapered tip of the oil tube into the BOTTOM hole and squeeze the tube until oil comes out the top hole. install the top plug with a NEW gasket. Remove the tube and install the bottom plug with a NEW gasket.

Done. EZ, huh?

The oil, sometimes called grease, should be 90w gear oil formulated for outboard engine gearcases. You may use a synthetic if you like, but DONT mix it with petroleum oils. Wal-Mart offers high quality lubrication products for outboards at very good prices. Look for the SuperTech brand. Failing that, look for oil branded by OMC or Mercury.

Don't forget: you promised to go get yourself a manual and a few good tools.

Red sky at night, sailor's delight.
JB
