We just purchased this boat and motor and the engine is a nightmare....... We have replaced the starter, power pack, regulator, water pump, impeller, plugs, new marine battery, and exhaust gasket and I am getting ready to rebuild the carberator. After you get the motor going, (because it is a bear to start) the motor runs for alittle while and then you shut it off, or it shuts itself off, and to get it to start again you have to take the plugs out of it and turn it over three or four times then put the plugs back in and then it will start back up. Why does it build up so much compression after you run it for just 5 min or 30 min............Our dream 1st. boat is beoming a major piggy bank....Please help us...................

There are lots of possibilities here so lets start with the basics. The carbs are the first thing to look at regardless. Clean both. What plugs are you using? What fuel? Be careful when spinning the motor over without the plugs in. Some fuel can be sprayed out and you have spark back there that has to go somewhere. Why did you change the exhaust gaskets? Follow ALL the wires to and from the power pack and make sure the firing order is correct. Just a thought -- are you sure it's a 1973? What's the model nomber? Post here or e-mail direct to dhadley50@aol.com. Good luck!
