Hello folks,
The motor is a '73 7.5 Merc with a tiller.
I am considering putting a control on the side of a small lightweight aluminum 12 footer so I can sit more centered and secure, as I am a big guy and the boat is small and light weight (I have it for a few reasons.)
I know from looking at the tiller connections that throttle and reverse remotes can most likely be made to fit.
So the question is; has anyone ever done the conversion?
I'm sure I'm not the only one ever to want to do that and the levers and connections on the motor itself look adaptable to me.
Can a generic or even a specifically designed unit be had that will do the job?
Were they available then?
Or do I need to invent, re-invent a way to make it happen?
I have a small hobby machine shop so certain things can be done to make fittings.
I would like to use a separate throttle and shifter if possible like on the older OMC controls I am familiar with. (WHAT OMC?????Sorry guys I had to use the reference as that's all I know. I'm repenting!)
Steering install is not hard to accomplish, and starting remains manual.
Any advice/hints or method/direction would be appreciated, thanks,
John.
