I've got a 73 650 3cyl that takes forever to start after it's been sitting for a few days. It cranks just fine but I get no spark. I try to start it every few minutes but still, no spark. Finally after awhile (usually about a half hour) for no reason, it starts right up! Once it has started, it will run all day. I can shut it off and start it up again no problem. I can come back the next day and it's fine. But since I mostly take it out on the weekends it usually sits for 5 days... so I go to start it and no spark!
Things I think I've ruled out:
Compression around 110 to 120 on all 3 cylinders
Battery is fine
Brand new rectifier
Brand new solenoid
Brand new battery cables
Fuel system is fine
Brand new spark plugs
I removed the mercury switch, and I also put in a new carbon brush and spring. I can't see any cracks in the distributor cap either. The plug leads are original but continuity is fine on all of them.
What's weird is that once the engine starts, everything is fine. It doesn't misfire and the spark is strong on all cylinders. It'll run great and won't have any trouble restarting. It's only after it has sat for a a few days that there's no spark.
I bought a parts engine for the lower unit, so i've tried switching out the switchbox, the ignition coil, and the stator. Wiring all looks good, I can't find any shorts in the grounds. I have not yet tried to swap out the trigger which I'll probably do this weekend, but aside from that I am totally out of ideas. What could I be missing?
