I had bought a new flywheel, installed correctly, cranked it and nada. Finally got it started for about 2 seconds, then it popped and shut off. Wouldn't start again, but would pop from time to time. Any suggestions?

Always check compression and spark first. If those two areas are as they should be, a existing problem is usually a fouled carburetor which needs cleaning.

If that flywheel nut wasn't torqued down to factory specifications, the flywheel key most likely sheared which throws the engine out of time. Check the flywheel key.

I'll give that a try. I also got a suggestion to check the points. This is all fairly new for me.

The factory oem service manual, NOT the owners manual, for your motor would be a great help to you as well they are available on iboats and people will tell you from experience that the clymer or seloc manuals just aren't engine specific enough.

Actually, what would be a really good help, is taking the motor back to the nig nog who charged you and arm and a leg and tell him you need to have hime get it done right. It's only right that you should have it running right, if that is what you paid him to do.
