>I'd set the throttle to neutral
>Remove lower unit
>rotate the shifter shaft till you get neutral
>carefully reinstall lower unit

This is presuming you never readjusted the cable position on the motor

hey schematic.. when i rotate the shifter shaft it has a long space where it is in fwd.. then it hits a space where it gets like spring loaded and when it does click it is not clean N it still clicks a little either way you move the prop... but if i go a little further it clears... but there is no way ( that i could find ) to keep the shaft there........ any suggestions??

hey merc can you email me at jalba@hot.rr.com.. you replyed to my ? before.. and somewhere i read that is what you are supposed to do .. put it in foward.. but for some reason i can not get it just where it is supposed to go.. i have tried but as i was saying there is that stupid little slide on thing that unlocks the motor and i have to set that .. but do i rotate the shaft all the way to the left or right it is all in fwd but i am sure it makes a diff on when or if it reaches N or R or unlocks the motor.... I did order the book for it but it will not be here till like Thursday i was just seeing if i could get this done .....

It's actually better (For the year of your motor) to have both the shifter AND the lower unit in foward gear. If in neutral and it bumps something while being installed, it will go into foward gear and then your right back where you started.

Good luck and happy boating.

Craig

jmalba :

I am not sure what you mean about "that stupid little slide on thing that unlocks the motor and i have to set that".

As far as how much to rotate the shift shaft on the lower unit, look (With a flashlight) up from where the lower unit installs and locate the shaft that fits onto the shift shaft on the lower unit. Have someone at the controls and shift from neutral to foward so you get an idea of how much travel the shaft takes (It's not that much).

Let us know how you make out.

Craig

Hey merc.. what i meant by that stupid little thing is that piece that guids the rod that will atomaticaly unlock the motor in D and lock it in N... . but i think i can figure that out now that i have stabbed it several dozen times.. lol... but to no good .. i still have not been able to get it to set right... i have got close but the closest i can get is where it can slip a little in N but clean N is the first click in R .. then i have gone the opposite where it will not shift at all ... stays in D .. I am thinking i am going to wait on the Book for it and pray that it has what i need.. and hopefully that will take care of that when i can see what i am supposed to do.. I pulled the plugs on it to put new ones.. and noticed that the #4 cyl is not dirty at all .. the other 3 are wet still but #4 was almost rusty looking ...any clues
