'72 merc 1150 not charging?

motor ran great all week with a new battery,<br />but on the 7th day it was dead. Tach. is also not<br />working.( but never did, it's our maiden voyage)<br />the battery was new, but not sure if fully charged?<br />did wire an automatic bilge pump w/float direct<br />to battery. other than that, only have the gas guage from permanent tank, no other electronics.<br />any help is most appreciated.

Check the rectifier as per manual. If rectifier checks OK, check the stator for appropriate resistance and a/c voltage while running.

thanks for the help schematic. I will look at the manual this evening (which really confuses me more), but if 1 or both of these need replacing,<br />other than having a dead battery, would it adversly affect the motor in any way? she's like<br />a beautiful 30 yr. old virgin

If I remember right, that switch box is powered by the battery/charging system. She won't run with a dead system. You gotta have a charging system....

sorry for not being more specific schematic...<br />if I re-charge the battery and run her again,<br />other than sucking the battery, is it bad for the<br />motor in any way???<br />thanks for your help(again)

can't see it hurtin'<br /> But be carefull when charging the battery! If the engine is left hooked up, the charging voltage could rise to a dangerous level while recharging. This voltage could damage the switch box. Disconnect battery manually or with a disconnect when recharging...
