Howdy from Texas. I have a issue with a 72 evinrude with electric shift. I bought it about a week ago, and finally got it started you have to play with the throttle while turning the key to hit the lucky spot. I got it running on the muffs and shifted the gears to make sure they worked, it died in forward and now I can't get it to turn over anymore, any help will be greatly appreciated, I assume there has to be a way to get it back in neutral. Thanks in advance

An engine with the Hydro-Electric Shift(pushbutton in the case of Evinrude), will shift into Forward whenever the engine stops rotating. It will not shift to neutral or reverse unless the engine is rotating. There are some interlocks that will prevent the Starter engaging. Is the throttle lever at idle? Try bypassing the Soleniod. Of course there are the bacics, good Battery, clean and tight connections

The '72 has several safety switches so we can only make educated guesses. My guess, based on your description is that since you have to jiggle the throttle, there is a problem with the safety switch on the throttle on the motor. Outside of that, the throttle handle on the remote control has to be in a slow position. And you cannot push the buttons unless it is. And the neutral button has to be depressed before the starter will work.

As already stated, the motor will always default to forward gear if not running, so don't get confused by that.

Also, if you have the control lever pulled all the way back to idle, and slowly push it forward, you will feel a "bump". That bump indicates the position it should be in to start the motor. Of course, for that to work properly, the throttle cable and safety switch on the motor must be properly adjusted. Get the picture? Everything must be working and properly adjusted. Then it's a fine system.

Was starting fine until I put it in gear and it died, now no matter how much I mess with the throttle while trying to start it nothing happens. Thanks for the responses.

Check the wee switch near the throttle arm on the motor.----Has one white wire going to it.---Just 1 white wire.-----Switch may need adjusting or cleaning.---very easy to clean that switch.

Big lower, but try it in a barrel if you can find something wide and deep enough (much quieter, and better for testing other systems). Going to want to replace the impeller unless you know it's fresh.

Agree with other posts saying it's a good runner (had one slightly older and slightly bigger, and really liked it). Got more safeties on it than a Remington -- certainly the one that can go off if you drop it.
