72' Johnson 65 hp electric shift NO REVERSE

Johnson 65ESL-72S, reverse does not engage. It sounds like it tries and at idle will actually revers extremly slow. If I throttle up the engine revs and there is no reverse. What could it be? I have only been a boat owner for about a year, so my knowledge of outboards is minimal. I am pretty mechanical and would like to do it on my own. Need some starting points. Thanks

With the key in the "on" position make sure you have power on BOTH wires going to the lower unit. If so, drain the lube and refill with the proper lube for 1972 motor. We are looking for the correct type fluid that is water free.<br /><br />Good luck!
