I have a 72 Johnson 6 HP long shaft, that came off of my old sailboat. It needed work, so I'm rebuilding it.

In the mean time I had bought a new 6HP for my current sailboat, and it is a long shaft. So I don't have a need for two long shaft engines. I have an inflatable dinghy in need of a short shaft motor, so I thought I would give the Johnson 6 HP a new home :)

The Johnson looks like an easy conversion, remove the 5" extension, install a shorter driveshaft, shift rod, and cut 5" off of the water tube.

I do not any of the proper tools to cut, weld, and balance the driveshaft, so I want to avoid doing that. Same thing with the shift rod, I don't want to cut and splice it.

Where would be a good source to get the shorter drive shaft and shift rod?

Go to the "Top Secret Files" at the top of this page. At the bottom of that page is a list of good salvage yards. One of those can help you out.
