72 Johnson 50 hp electric shift, electric start- won't run at full throttle

Got her out on the water for the first time (project boat). Just replaced the ignition (all components except the stator), and put a used lower unit on it (original wouldn't shift)

Runs OK at idle, and when in neutral I can rev it up just fine. But when I put her in gear and throttle up it's like it'll only go at 1/4 to 1/3 throttle.

Runs nice and smooth, no missing or sputtering, just runs like the throttle is only partially engaged, even when it was held wide open.

I was thinking control box or cable, but it all works fine in neutral, I can't see what difference putting it in gear could make to the throttle control (it's electric shift).

I have replaced most of the ignition components including the timer base, so initially I was thinking maybe the timing advance, but it works fine in neutral.

Then I started to wonder if the new (used) lower unit I just installed might be binding internally or somehow not working correctly causing the slowdown, but I surmised that if this were the case, then I would hear something or feel something, and I didn't.

Then i started thinking carbs. I checked fuel filter, clean. Checked fuel pressure, but looks ok (disconnected fuel line coming out of pump, and turned it over a few times, seems good).

But as I was fiddling with the choke, and the idle adjustments it almost started going good a few times, but always fell back to limping along pretty quick. Sometimes I found that if I clicked the choke button on the control box and held it, it would almost start going good, but then it would bog down again. So I'm fairly certain these carbs need rebuilding.

Carbs and transmissons have always been my weak spot on cars and motorcycles, but these things look pretty simple.

What do you guys think? Any advice before I tear into the carbs? Am I missing something?

Some history on the boat in it's prior life may help but, I suspect that the previous may have let the boat sit without use for some time.. ?
Before getting too deep into it I would verify that the throttle plates are opening all the way, "when it's held wide open".
Next visually inspect the spark plugs.
Then check for spark and compression.
An engine may rev up fine at idle and still not be running on all cylinders.

Just going back to my 2 stroke motorcycle days and my Fathers 6hp Evinrude of some years back. It can sound great until it gets under load, then the problems start. I remember ignition coils, spark plugs and condensers !!!

It's got new ignition coils, spark plugs, power pack, and Timer Base. The entire ignition has been replaced.

Hi Robtown, I have a johnson 50 hp that does the exact same thing?

It runs fine in idle and revs up no problem but when I go to accelerate, it seems like it just doesn't get the power?? Im not sure what the problems is...or where to start...sometimes it sounds like I am only running on one cylinder...??

maybe it is the carbs??

was wondering if you solved this problem?? it seems like I am having the same sort of problem

mine is a 71, but im pretty sure they are the same
