I had posted an earlier topic on this engine. I have now, with the manual, tested some more. Battery voltage at the engine is 12v. I checked sensor air gap and sensor ohms within limits. Terminal 8 and 9 have 12 v w/ ign on. tried testing term 5 (blue wire) w/ vom, got about -.5v. Engine ran good one week ago, left battery hooked up by accident afterwards. Now the ignition isnt firing. Scared to say it has bad power pack b/c it is kind of an expensive thing to buy if I wasnt sure.

Re: 72 Johnson 125 , no spark

Does sound like a blown pack, but no worries.

OK, first of all, if you continue to run powerpacks (sensor or points-based), they may blow if you have flaky (intermittent) connections in the cables to the battery, or in the wiring of the boat. Same with running a 'small' battery. There is no voltage regulator on these systems, so spikes are eaten up by a big fat-assed battery (by design). If one runs a battery just big enough to confidently run the starter motor, you cook the big bucks powerpack. BTW, the powerpack WILL blow, immediately, if you hook the battery up backwards.

OK, we got that out of the way. Good used sensor-based powerpacks run $75 to $125 on eBay. If you want something a little less iffy, I highly recommend CDI/Rapair as a source for a replacement pack. It's difficult to speak definitively, but the general tilt of the conversation here is that CDI has learned from the burnouts they receive, & builds a stronger pack than OEM (plus it's cheaper). I think around $200, if you can't find it for that online give a shout.

I'd note, also, that points-based ignitions were fitted to the 'cheaper' V4s in your time span (1969-72) and will bolt to your motor. Specifically, you 125 crank will have a cam to run a 'points-style' ignition. I'll refer you to searches of the archives to look at various alternative based on that route. Again, if you get stuck, give a holler.

Thanks for the advice. I m doing an extensive search thru the forum and have found some things I havent checked well enough yet(sensor wire breakage, anti reverse spring).

Re: 72 Johnson 125 , no spark

I removed the flywheel again and checked the anti reverse spring. Everything looked ok, so I removed the poweer pack and switched ground and replaced. I then jumped the sensor wires to check for spark and you could here the distributor buzzing. It now runs...............thanx for the help. I wonder if it is a ground or broken wire
