i need help with my motor. it is having trouble starting and staying running. i have changed the spark plugs and given it a bit of a tune up. but still is not running properly any suggestions. i have set the plugs to .030 but i am unsure where the points are located. it seems that the gas is not getting in!

Well to start with, what do you have for an engine (what's the model number)? What kind of compression and spark do you have?

Re: 72 evinrude

A 9.5 hp. The points are under the flywheel, but if the spark will jump a 3/8" air gap and is bright blue, you don't need to go there. You do need to check the compression, if the compression is poor, you can replace every part on the engine and it still will not run. You might try squirting some fuel into the carb and see if it will fire and run, if so it might be time to overhaul the carb.

thank you. i have adjusted the throttle but it seems like it is getting too much gas now when you start the motor. then once i adjusted the idle i am unable to get it to shift.

Re: 72 evinrude

if the timing plate is not revolving freely, and returning all way to idle, it will not shift.
