Hello again all, my previous post was a overall "help me" thread..... now that you all and my oem manuel have taught me a thing or two I am on to more detailed questions...

First off I may have goofed a little, I changed the lower unit oil today, I used mallory Type C and filled from the bottom till the oil came outthe vent hole, then hurried like hell to get the drain fill screw back in.... sounds all good right? well my concern is that tomarrow I plan to tackle the impeller....... will I lose that fresh oil when i change the impeller or is it sealed and wont matter?

secondly I would love any "tips" to make tomarrows impeller job easyer, or to know anything to "look out" for......

finally there are two..... holes.... drains.... something on the side of the boat (72 larson shark 1600) that I am unsure what they are.... both are on the starboard side, the one toward the rear seems to easily be above waterline (never had the boat on the water yet) and the one toward the front it lower mabey at the waterline even possibly below.....

I did some research on Bilge drains, and my craft does have a bilge pump switch on the "dash"....... when on the water do these need to be pluged or open are they both bilge related or??????????????

THANKS!!!!!

The rear hole is definatly a bilge hole. As for the front, I am not sure. Does this boat have a live well?

That electric shift lower unit must have special Bombardier Premium Blend gear oil in it. It is not the normal mechanical shift gear oil. When you pull the lower unit down to replace the impeller, you will not be distubing the lower unit gearbox oil. That stays sealed as you replace the impeller. That engine builds up (retains) water in the midsection once the engine starts. The midsection water jacket surrounds the exhaust tube to provide cooling and for sound (deadening) insulation. When the engine is shut off, that water drains out of the midsection. That engine does not have an overboard "telltale," indicating the water pump is working. You can tell if the engine is operating normally by holding your hand next to the two exhaust relief holes at the top of the midsection. About a minute after the engine cold starts, the thermostat (vernatherm) will open. At that point, small water droplets will form on your hand. That's normal.

Can you post some pictures of your Larson 1600? I have one too and I am trying to determine what year mine is.

Also when you drop the lower unit you better have tied some string to the blue and green wires or your going have one heck of a time fishing them back up to the powerhead.

Thread was started in November 2010. Hopefully, he has it fixed by now. Or totally messed up.
