Gents,

Been a reader for a while. This board is very, very helpful.

My problem: Boat runs great at WOT. When I reduce the throttle, it stalls and very difficult to restart. I have to adjust low speed mixture to get it to start.

Do I need a carb rebuild?

Will SeaFoam clean the carb?

Can I use carb cleaner aerosal?

Tx.

Joe

Howdy, Steam Mill. Welcome to the board.

Overhaul your fuel pump and clean your carbs. Be sure that the float height settings are correct.

Let us know how it turns out.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Steam Mill, it sounds like SeaFoam isn't your answer. Like JB suggested, you will have to remove the carb to see what kind of crud may be inside. The carb cleaner will be handy to blast out the passages, but I wouldn't use it on a running 2-stroke. SeaFoam in the fuel will act as a cleaner/stabilizer for future use, though. Good luck!

I agree with them, I had the same problem with my motor about a week ago it had been sitting for 4 years. The Low idle passagw way was clogged. I blew out the passage with a air compressor and it ran great after that, the float on mine was also stuck.
GoodLuck

Re: '72 evinrude 50 hp

I have never cleaned a carb. I do have the seloc manual for it. My questions are:

Do I have to remove the carb to clean it?

I have adjusted the low-speed mixture. Is what I am turning acutally the jet? If so, can I just remove it and clean it?

If I have to remove the carb, do I have to synchronize it when I put it back?

If I remove the carb, should I get a rebuild kit?

How mechanically adept to I need to be for a rebuild?

Again, thank-you everyone for your responses.

P.S. Any comments on ensuring the electric shift contiunes to shift. I had the gearcase resealed and a new waterpump installed at the local dealer last year. I change lube yearly and check it mid season. I use the boat for fishing every weekend at the cottage.

Tx. again.

Yes - you have to remove the carbs to clean. clean both. I would recommend two rebuild kits, the kits contain the top plug. Remove the old plugs so you can clean the small passages down to the air intake. These passages are the iddle nozzles. Disassemble carbs, soak bodies and parts in cleaning solvent, clean and assemble. Put carbs back on. Remove air intake muffler. When you start opening throttle, both carbs mush start exactly same time - exactly. Adjust to u are sure.

Be sure everything is clean and assembled correctly. Be sure to remember all gaskets, the center too.

When you adjust iddle mixture, which from start is set to 1 1/2 turns from bottum, you turn a little needle valve, not nozzle.

Hope this helps.

Hi Steam_mill, When you first start the motor, when it's cold, does it start right up? Maybe run rough? If that happens consistently, I wouldn't be completely sure it's a carburetor problem. A coil or stator could be starting to fail. When they get warm, the resistence changes. you may one that's not completely bad yet. Maybe try running it when it's cold and direct a hair dryer towards those parts. to warm them up and see if the motoer starts to die.
Here's another that may be a but hard to understand. The piston skirts could be worn. It will run fine at WOT, but when you decrease RPM. It can give you the symptoms you mentioned. The only way to check this would be to remove the pistons and measure them. I wouldn't do that until you have checked everything else first. Let us know, :)

Iceman,

Thanks for the reply. Actually, when I start the motor up (after sitting in the water for a week or more), the motor always starts first shot. I runs great at idle and great to get to my favorite fishing hole. However, when I get to the fishing hole and go to less than half throttle, the engine stalls.

Ideas?

Tx.

Joe
