72 50HP Rude questions

Got a good deal on a 72 50HP Electric Shift Evinrude this weekend. Said it ran good but didn't shift. Pulled the lower unit, found broken wires. Back together with a new impeller, fired up and it shifts!. Problem is it overheated. I'm waiting for my manual to arrive but in the mean time got a couple questions. <br /><br />Where is the thermostat located? Can a tell tale be added to see water flow? What would most likely cause it not to want to slow idle without dying? Thanks.

carbs need cleaned likely. I don't know how to rig a telltale, but heard of it being done. the thermostat location on two-cylinders covered in my book (as far back as 1973) show it below bottom cylinder. go to ishopmarine.com they have exploded views, very handy....
