I am in the process of overhauling and checking my newly aquired 1972 40hp Evinrude and I have a couple of questions that I'm sure someone here can help with.
No1: I have removed the lower unit to check and replace the impeller and I find that the book says that there should be an "o"ring on top of the drive shaft. When I withdrew the shaft there was no"o"ring nor any kind of groove to accept one so my question is ,are there two different setups on this model?or was the O ring simply left Out last time, and how does it fit if there is supposed to be one?
No 2, It says in the book that 40hp models were fitted with a two pipe water pump but this one is only a single pipe job.Is this OK?Everything else looks fine and the pump is sporting what looks like a brand new grommet, also the impeller, but I'm going to fit a new one any way just to be sure.
At the moment I'm only using the Seloc book till my factory manual arrives but it is pretty clear on these subjects.
All help appreciated.

A 1972 40 HP has a single tube water pump and no O-ring on the driveshaft. The evil dark lord Seloc lies again. :D

As I've said before, Seloc and Clymer are good to rest your knees on when working on something. Or else set your beer on them or use them to replace the Sears catalog in your outdoor "John".

I agee with boobie on the manuals. If I remember they went to a single feed tube when they changed the midsection design around 69 or 70....

Yeah, thanks guys,I thought it would be something like that,I have ordered the real deal from Kencook but till now I've just been working with the Seloc that came with the motor. One thing I am curious about though is that when i took it apart there were no gaskets of any kind in there.Guess I'll find out when I get the manual.
