Hello all...

I just bought my first boat. She is an 18ft Starcraft SS with an 1150 Merc (3367838) on the back. Any way of knowing if this is the original power for the boat?

Anyway I get her home today and she fired right up after I changed the battery. It is missing, but idles and engages forward/reverse and revs fine. Throttle seems to need adjusting though.

Internal harness was just done last year as was the impeller and gear oil. My water stream seems weak running on the earmuffs.

The carbs seem to be a little wet. Do I pull them and replace the gaskets or is a complete rebuild in order. Also the fuel pump might be weak. It died once and I had to pump the bulb because it was empty.

I am not really sure where to start and just seeking some guidance.

Carbs?
Fuel Pump?
Water Pump?

Thanks!

Ok...I will start with compression. Do I just need to do the impeller or does the water pump need to be done too?

About the carbs. Can I just pull them, clean them and replace the gaskets? Or do I really need to tear them down and rebuild them. There is a local guy who will work on these Mercs, should I just let him deal with the carbs and take care of timing it?

Can I go off the engine # to get the carb kits or should I wait until the carbs are off?

Thanks!

these old mercs are ez to work on but i would get the compression test done before throwing money into parts. After the compression test is done and up to par, i would change the impeller for peace of mindhttp://www.iboats.com/mall/partfinder/?*******=234178918&gd_grid_id=927&gd_poid=355281&gd_row=128&**********=319573524 and the carb kits are about 18 bucks x threehttp://www.iboats.com/mall/partfinder/?*******=234178918&gd_grid_id=923&gd_poid=112064&gd_row=69&**********=744849168 then after that you can do a lync and sync and after that enjoy your boat

Douglas is right on track. Basics.

After compression check. I believe the drive shaft is carbon steel that year, look for a worn groove at the impellar seal. Just throwing that UP for Ya. Good luck Buddie. Post when needed.

Will do...need to get a compression tester though.

What numbers am I looking for? I have read that basicallt anything over 90 is workable...where do I need to be to move forward?

i'd shoot for the test results to be within 10% some people will say 15%. Some auto parts store have a tool rental where you put the money down and get it all back when you return it, i'd just buy one there about 20 bucks or so

Well I have good news and bad news...

The bad is that compression is low.

The good news is that the cylinders are close to dead even.

They are all right about 98psi according to my cheap gauge. So I have been doing some reading and those numbers, while low, are strong enough to continue...right?

Let me know what the experts think. Thanks!
