I posted a question about the motor idle being too fast and a member said I need a carb kit and to do a "link and sync". What is this and how complicated is it? Can someone tell me how to do it? Must I have a manual? About how much for a carb kit and what will I get in it? How will this '71 9.8hp compare to a '96 6hp?

Hi, Scott. The BEST way to deal with this question is to get the correct manual for YOUR engine. Clymer is my recommendation, thought others may not agree.<br /><br />"Link 'n' synch" is adjusting the throttle and ignition timing to synchronize correctly.<br /><br />When you have the manual it is quite straightforward and simple. When we old time wrenches try to describe it it can sound incredibly difficult.<br /><br />The 6hp and the 9.8 are different engines and different worlds. Don't expect anything to transfer.<br /><br />Red sky at night. . .<br />JB :)

I wanted to know about the actual hp output at the prop of a 71 9.8 verses my 96 6hp.<br />I have heard that the older engines were rated at the motor and the new ones are rated at the prop.

You heard correctly, Scott. The 9.8 probably put about 8hp to the prop.<br /><br />Red sky at night. . .<br />JB :)

I believe it was me that told you that..sorry Somtimes I can be really short. As JB said you NEED a manual and a carb kit can come in a couple of different ways. The simple kit will provide gaskets, needle and seat and a few other little things depending on the carb. Full kits will provide floats and shafts and even the welch pulgs for the side of the carb. MOST of the time the simple kit will do fine. They are around twenty dollars or less. Most engines do not require alot of adjusting on the linc and sync unless someone has been screwing around with it that does not have a clue what is going on. A good fuel system cleaner like (Berrman's B12) does really well. Use it a couple of times a year.. You can get it at Wal Mart. Iv used it for years. Get a manual and if you have problems come back here I know some of the guys will be glad to help.. Good luck. Trent
