71 johnson 50hp runs when it wants

I have a 71 johnson 50hp had trouble last month with motor while on vacation stranded for 2hrs in the middle of a lake.motor would not start. checked compression No 1 (100psi) No 2 (30psi) took motor apart put in new rings (head gasket etc. now '''(120psi)'''''''(125psi) got motor running, sometimes seemed to be hot. Replaced impeller it was shot. doesn't want to run right. (spark good)( fuel prime ball tight) timing i think is right 18 degrees. whats going on ? wants to run starts to turn over slow please help me solve this problem ( xstreammm )

found out part of my problem,flywheel key was sheared off. The engine runs good now when you doo get it going, the problem is knowing if it is going to start every time. One time it will pop right off the next time it totally turns into acting like timing is off Does any buddy have any answers (carb needles set at 5/8 )

Are you sure you have that flywheel torqued to specs?

I torqued the flywheel according to my book (80psi)plus marked with marker and made sure it didn't more on torquing (that happened before. Spark Plugs Champion L77JC4 Whats the true gap I have found in books both ( 30 t gap and 40 t gap)what one should i go by.

Don't want to tell you how to live, but if it were mine I would get a new set of QL77JC4 and set at .03.

X....agree with ezeke on plugs but I'd set at .040.<br /><br />Keep a bottle of spray premix handy when you try to start the engine. If it gives ya' problems, shoot some premix into the carb throats. If she fires off, then you know it's fuel related.<br /><br />Is the choke working OK and did ya' redo the carbs when ya' overhauled the engine?

About the spark plugs ezeke or outboardJim is (Ql77JC4) Hotter or Colder then ( L77JC4) Also went to the start motor yesterday, got it started but had to use choke a lot, only way it would start. but when starting could see gas squirting out carb, you would think to much gas. Have not touched carbs ( 5/8 on needles )
