i have a 71 johnson 50 hp that won't start.
it has spark and is getting gas but when you turn it over it just pops and spits.
the new parts i put on it are: power pac, stator plate, rectifier, head gasket, and ignition switch.
the carbs are clean and the coils work.
the motor hasn't run in 4 years but with all of the new parts what the heck is left to go wrong?
also, compression is good.

Make sure you are using a good fresh starting type batter. As a deed cycle type or other type may not be spinning it fast enough.

Howdy, Cworm.

If, as you say, the carbs are clean and the pump is feeding them correctly, I think you have an ignition timing problem.

Could be the link to the throttle, could be a broken woodruff key.

Good luck. :)

thanks for the advice, it turned out to be the flywheel key.
the flywheel was almost 180 degrees off!
it runs great now.
