I am new to the forum, did some t shootingon my electro shift stuck in foreward.

1. was getting 10 vdc to my green wire neutral in neutral.
2. was getting 8 vdc to blue wire in reverse.

then disconnected both wires green and blue.
1. applied 12vdc jumper to green wire-did not shift to neutral will running in foreward.
2. then applied 12vdc to blue wire, but didnt jumper 12 vdc to green and blue so i don't know if reverse works.

Question
1. is 10 and 8 vdc enough to power the neutral and reverse solenoids?
2. is my assumption good that both solenoids are bad, sounds like unlikely to get both bad at the same time?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Terry

I need to jump in the sack right now, but if you use the search function for "hydroelectric shift," "hydro-electric shift" or "hydro electric shift," you'll find lots of threads on your issue.

I'll try to get back to this thread tomorrow to see how you are making out.

Do you have water in the gearcase? That can mess it up.

Your voltages are abnormal. But it should have shifted to neutral when jumped. And of course, as you said, you didn't have a proper reverse hookup.

I suggest you go the next step and check the resistances. Connect your ohmmeter to the green and blue wires going to the gearcase (wires disconnected). You should get 5 - 6 ohms on each one. If not, you could have a bad cable going down to the solenoids. Or bad solenoids.

If the resistances are normal and it still won't shift when jumpered, there is a hydraulic or mechanical problem in the gearcase.

And we still haven't decided why the voltages are low. Make sure you have 12V on the jumper.

Here's the test for a 1972, 65hp OMC motor - it should be the same for yours.

TESTING SHIFT SOLENOIDS

a. Neutral solenoid - connect low reading DC ammeter between green leads at knife connectors.

b. Shift into neutral position - key switch on

c. Ammeter should read 1.5 - 2.0 amps for 10 minutes.

d. If reading is too high or too low, solenoid should be replaced.

e. Repeat test between blue leads. Shift into reverse, use same test values and procedure.

f. Ohmmeter test (key switch off) - connect meter between green lead and ground and then blue lead and ground. Low ohms scale should read 5 - 6 ohms.

Re: 71 50hp johnson stuck in foreward

so i bought s seloc manual and its the wrong one, the local dealer told me to buy the wrong one, got the manual for the 3 cyl, but its only a 2 cyl.

Looked at it and it's giving me the same tests you all have mentioned. Guess i should have done this to begin with. Duh.

Will try the test tomorrow, ohming of the solenoids, possibly testing of the remote, hope they will return my money or order me the right manual.

thanks for your help. need to get this thing running right, salmon season is near.

You might want to consider getting an OMC service manual for your specific engine. They are available in a number of places, possibly even right here at iboats.

yes, i will do that buy the manual.

I tested the solenoids in the lower unit, blue-reverse is 5-6 ohms,
green-neutral is open.

So i will have to opener up and see why it's open.

Any ideas why it could be open? wire broken, bad connection, solenoid bad

Re: 71 50hp johnson stuck in foreward

thanks for everyones help, found the problem and got her fixed.

The neutral solenoid cable was severed by the cable metal tie strap inside the lower unit.

Appears when the water pump was replaced 2 years ago that the cable wasn't put into the housing careful enough and the metal cable fastener cut through the neutral cable.

I cut the cable and used some dura seal butt connectors, routed the cable more carefully and i'm back in business.

Thank you very much, all who replied!
