Just traded the 25hp motor I fixed for a 40hp Workhorse S.S.

Runs ok, not as nice an idle as the 25. Pushes my heavy 14 ft at 30mph.

100 psi comp top and bottom

Problem is, at 3/4 throttle runs good, wide open acts like it is gas starving, I pump the bulb and all is well.

Looked around, fuel pumps are $$$$$$

Any ideas ???

There are some pump kits available, what is the year or model#?

It is a J40RWLC1S - have not looked up the year.

Did not have a clamp on the hose/connector at the motor, put a hose clamp on it. It was loose, was probably sucking some air. Too much rain today down here to try it.

Wonder if there is a pump kit for it. Also, looks like low speed jet is not stock, original had an arm on it (from what I have seen). Maybe the reason for rich idle...

Looks like a 'mutt' motor, black block, mixture of Johnson and Evinrude parts on it :)

Pushes my heavy 14' fiberglass boat and me (235lbs) at 30mph per gps...

Yep, sucking air in the fuel line somewhere.

Good news is you have the starter bracket :) That's the hard-to-find part. Starter motors can be had for about $70, solenoids around $30.

Well -

I got mine running perfect just a bit ago.

What did I do? I started by checking the tank and line. The tank fittings seemed airtight, so it must be past that. The valve in the bulb seemed to allow fuel to run back to the tank, but it pumped ok so I left it be.

The connector at the engine was kinda haggard, seemed to leak air a bit when fitted to the male connector, so I replaced it.

Now I was up to the fuel pump and carb. The pump seemed to be ok, but I took it apart anyway, flipped the valves over just in case.

Put it back on with some gasket goop.

Took the carb apart, cant remember why I thought the drain plug was the jet. All looked ok, ran wire thru stuff to make sure, blew out with airgun. I noticed there was not much travel in the float, so I bent it down just a tad to let the bowl fill up a bit more.

Put it all back together, put in test garbage can, fired it up. Had the 'i'm too lean' hiccups bad. Backed out the idle asjustment, still seemed lean. Put finger over the throat, it calmed down. Hmmm....getting air somewhere. Checked all the little hoses, all seemed ok. The one going to the rev limiter seemed loose, I eliminated it.

Bingo! Nice idle....

Took it out to the ramp, go out to the river, opened it up - Yayus !! Now we are talking! Now it runs great !!!!

Not sure which did the trick, but the end result is good !!
