Dear all, it is my first topic here and i would like your help. i have a 70hp Johnson outboard i just bought with a serial number BJ70TLEUM and i need to install it on my boat but i can not find any wiring diagram or anything else that will help me. All the wires coming out of the motor are there (with their plugs also, orange color) but i do not know which one goes where.

Thank you all in advance

Usually a motor comes with the control box and all the wiring.--------That would take one of the newer style controls 97 and up.----------The wires would then all be " plug and play "---Best to find a control box and wiring.

dear racerone thank you for the reply. i forgot to mention that i bought the motor as "used" and does not have any control box with it. I am trying to find a wiring harness but that is not possible. i can find for other models but not for this one....

Try looking for a complete used control box, not a wiring harness. That should be fairly easy to find ...

tell us or show us a picture of the control that is already on the motor!!...that's the first step.... IF........it is an OMC product there will be a harness to connect to your motor....

It is an OMC product ---------It has the new style plugs that came out in 97 or so.-----May not be easy to find or you should visit a dealer and perhaps find an adapter cable to go to an older style control box !

I am talking about his CONTROL, not the motor.... if he shows us the control....we can come up with the adapter that fits post 95 motors... if he has some mercury, control, we cant do anything..

my bad, I read the OP, and thought "boat" ment boat and controls..

well the OP cant look for a harness, until he gets a control.. the controls are easy to find...if you know where to look... and WHAT to look for.

the diagram probably wont do him any good, unless he cuts the deutsch plugs off the ends of the harness and tries to wire individually... all he needs is the proper harness, and he cant help but plug the connectors into the only other connector that fits!!!!!!!!!...you cant mess it up...

.he should just go buy a post 95 control.. and it is PLUG n PLAY..maybe 4 connections tops....no "adapter " harness would be needed!!!

thank you all for your help. Bob, I recently bought a universal control (new), i think it is Teleflex (?), but it has no connection ports on it. I think what i have to do is to find each wire that comes out of the motor and connect it to it's terminal i.e. starter switch etc. I have also bought a key switch (with 8 wires), a three-point switch for tilt, a battery isolator, kill switch etc. I went to a marine mechanic, which is the distributor for Johnson, but he told me that this will cost around 450 EUROS, around 500USD. I don't know what is the right thing to do...

i can also buy a control box, but as i can see from a small search through the internet, that is almost impossible, maybe because i am not familiar with the appropriate web pages...if somebody knows pages for these kind of things that would be awsome...but anyway thanks again..

Edit: i've found this control http://www.amazon.com/BRP-Johnson-Evinrude-Outboard-Control/dp/B001KXXWZ6?SubscriptionId=AKIAIKBZ7IH7LXTW3ARA&&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B001KXXWZ6&tag=wwwbookcompar-20&ascsubtag=550140844aa858125cda24c0 will this be as plug and play? thanks

I assume you are not in the US based on the Euro's comment above.

$500 seems a bit high. Try searching ebay - Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor controls.

I saw a couple listing in the $100 to $200 range. These are Red plug harnesses.

knowledge is GOOD.... you will need to decide what KIND of control you want. Meaning where you want to mount it...side mount, or binnacle mount(usually on a horizontal or angled surface on a center console)...once you decide that, then you can LOOK for a control. even if you couldn't find the EXACT fit...if you found something that you liked and that fit the boat itself...and was made by OMC, then you could look for the adapter that connects the control to your motor. I seemingly would be less than $500... I have seen controls for $250 and less often, and the adpaters( in case you find a older control) I have seen for $200 and less..

here are the two main styles...each could be had with older OR newer connectors probably

Bob thank you so much for your help. I have concluded about the control; i will give back the universal control that i've recently bought and i am going to buy the BRP new model which is compatible with my motor (easier to install, plug 'n' play, etc). It will be side mounted, as i prefer it that way. Having in mind that each topic on this forum (being said on the Rules page) is like a dictionary for somebody else, i am thinking of starting a new topic, showing my wire hardness coming out of the motor with the wish that someone will help me out there also. Thanks again you all

When ever there are wires and electrics involved there are many ways of doing / accomplishing things.---Not sure what you know or want to do for how many euros.---One thing you can do is trace each wire from the connecters on the motor and see what each wire is for.---Then you can install a terminal board or a red plug to go to an older / more available control.----Do what ever you are comfortable with.

racerone thanks. as my knowledge, electrical wise, is limited, i prefer to spend a few Euros more to have my job done. But getting into this, i think i have to learn some more details on electrical. But anyway, thank you again.
