I posted earlier about trying to see what model years run what stators and I found some information but I have a much more precise question this time.
For the '70-71 model 40 hp mercury it calls for stator 174-4424 and for the 72-81 models (same 40 hp) it calls for stator 174-5255. Both are 5 wire, three to the switchbox, two to the rectifier which is the same for all those years I think. What, if anything, is the difference?
In the schematics they look darn near identical but that is just online literature and I have yet to find any solid info that it will work. I am inclined to think that it will but I just don't want to buy something that won't work. I have found a good deal on a used 1970 (Canada) unit.
If someone with more boating knowledge has any info please let me know. Or if you are inclined to think one way or another I would love your opinion and I'll count the yeah and neahs!
