This is a 10+ (no oil injection) year old motor that has never so much as sneezed before. After sitting for half a year, I got a new tank and fuel line assy. The tank is one of the portable tempo tanks that came with an evinrude connector. All I changed was the connector on the engine side of the fuel line. Engine seems to idle fine but rather quickly dies when you open the throttle even the slightest amount in gear. Put in a new set of plugs and that didn't seem to change anything. Also dies in a few minutes when run on fast idle. Pulled the carbs and they where perfectly clean. Fuel pump seems fine. tank vent open. It really behaves like it's running out of fuel, but starts right back up after it dies. I don't have the old tank to retry (was very rusted and I pitched it). Is there a problem using the evinrude connector at the tank? Any ideas appreciated.

Re: 70 nissan won't run past idle in gear.

The fittings don't matter as long as they match (male to female). Some look similar, and almost fit, such as Nissan to Suzuki (m/f) and Chrysler (m/f). Size does matter since fittings for Mid-power engines are a bit bigger than for small outboards. So, if the tank fitting is for small outboards, and the fuel line fitting at the tank side matches, it may not be large enough to supply adequate fuel for a larger outboard. This would not cause it to die immediately upon acceleration. You pulled the carbs, did you check the jets to make sure they are clean? If it is dying right away upon acceleration that would be the likely symptom of a clogged jet(s). It would not explain dying at high idle (depends how high), though neither would small fittings. It could be that debris from a new tank (plastic shavings...) may have clogged the tank's pick-up tube. Also, check the in-line fuel filter. It is simple to remove, flush, and replace.

Good luck.

arlon,

I hate those E/J connections on Tempo tanks. They leak air.

Replace that E/J connector with a straight hose barb.

jets where clean and so was the engine filter. I also have a clear inline filter that I noticed was filling with air as the engine idled. That seemed a little odd. I hadn't thought about an air leak being a problem but will start looking in that direction friday (soon as I can get to it). Will try the barb/direct connection and see if that helps. Thanks for the ideas. Arlon in Houston.

arlon,

By the way, use a 3/8" ID hose barb.
