70 Johnson question?

I am talking to guy who is willin got sell me his 70hp inline 3 with Hydro electirc shift.. are those reliable?? he says it has 120lbs on each cylinder.. is that good.<br /><br />He also has a 69 Johnson that is hydroelctric shift.. 100lbs on each cylinder both need keys... where can I get keys and I have heard the elctric sfhits suck is that true?? What do you guys think?

AFishing,<br /><br />Unless you are VERY mechanically adept, I would stay away from both of them.<br /><br />If the electro shifts were are working, they are OK. However, if they go out, they can be difficult and expensive to repair.

Compression is fine on both motors though I it would be better if the 69 were over 110 lbs (maybe needs decarb). As for the keys - you should be able to get them from a dealer. Look for a number somewhere on your ignition switch.

i have a 63 eletric shift and have owned 2 others . never had a problem with thim . you use a different oil in thim than the mechanickle shift . what year modle is the motor you are looking at. papasage....... <br /><br />ps i have changed a 50 hp 1963 eletric shift to a mechanickle off a 64 50 hp.
