Welcome Don - Supply the model number and someone will give you the year (look for numbers on the freeze plug). When you get the year do yourself a favor and buy the OMC shop manual for your motor. Why are you dropping the lower unit? Don't know your motor but many of the OMC shift rods are connected at just below the base of the carbs.

Re: 70 hp Johnson lower unit removal.

Best I can do for numbers is one from the Cylinder head...329835-2...Found no freeze plug. I am resurrecting an old 16' Tidecraft bowrider into a fish boat. Replaced the deteriorared flooring and built a casting platform in place of the bow seats. She had a 85 Johnson when I got her, it had a lot of taped-up wiring, an automotive coil, and a few other features that caused me to doubt it's reliability. I got a real deal on this 70 and it looks like a much better motor . It has been idle for about 3 years and I am replacing the water pump. Or I was until I found that the thing must be dissasembled to release the shift rod. I'll likely take it to a shop. I'm too old for this stuff. A first year design engineer should know that the impeller must be replaced occasionally as a maintenance item. Why would someone not design in a method to easily perform this task? Mercury and Volvo can do it.... Thanks. Oh, by the way. I have a 85 hp with controls in my garage that needs a new home. SS prop, rebuilt lower.I rebuilt the carbs a year ago.
