I recently aquired a 70 HP chrysler Mod 707BF Ser. 1017 which at for a long time. After a pretty thorough clean-up I ran it this week-end on my 16 foot crestliner. Top speed is acceptable at 29 mph(by gps), but I dont have the hole shot to pull me up skiing, I weigh about 175 lbs. When the engine is idling for a while it will die, I think the idle jets need adjusting, any ideas on where these should be set? Also when I checked the plugs at the end of the day they were very black, running rich? Is this something I can adjust, will it help with my hole shot? Also fuel/oil what is ratio I am using 50/1 but she smokes a lot. Thanks in advance.

Re: 70 HP Chrysler lack of hole shot

The Seloc manual for Chrysler suggests that you should close the screw on each carb and open to 1 full turn (starting point). I also have a 70Hp Chrysler (3 carbs) and mine are open at about 3/4 of a turn. As far as the fuel mixture is concerned, 50:1 is correct. There is also an idle adjustment on the tower shaft with a retaining nut on it. Your engine should idle between 600 - 750 rpms.

Your lack of hole shot may have to do with the pitch of your prop. I have a 17" pitch on 19' trihull cuddy cabin and my hole shot isn't too bad considering the weight of my boat.

Dymo
